Controlling and enhancing the brain damage rehabilitation process with the help of digital tools
Stroke patients and many other people who had brain damage due to other reasons need specific therapy that re-teaches their body to move again, which includes speaking, walking, moving one’s hands, etc.
While a lot of this is done via manual work, doctors need a convenient way to track the progress of their patients to adjust the treatments accordingly. HUSPI and Reha Stim Medtec united forces to tackle this challenge together.
The main tasks set before the HUSPI team were to create a set of games that would be controlled using special YouGrabber gloves and a dashboard for tracking and visualizing the data of the patient’s performance in the games and their rehabilitation progress.
“Our first joint product is a VR-based arm and finger training system. HUSPI was hired to enhance the existing software with a reporting system and introduce multi-lingual capabilities. They’ve also been tasked with developing a migration utility to move data from one to release to the next,” says Gary Honegger, CTO of the company during the cooperation.
Reha Stim Medtec and YouRehab, two Swiss companies, merged to create a larger portfolio of rehabilitation solutions, combining physical therapy games and effector-based robotic gait therapy.
The intensity and effectiveness of patient rehabilitation & training have increased by 3 times due to the new software plus sensor technologies.
“The HUSPI developers integrated themselves seamlessly into our small development team and despite the distance and only electronic communication, they showed the same dedication and involvement in our project as the internal part of the team.”

Set of therapeutic games
The games are based on various challenges to retrain the brain’s control of the upper limbs as well as cognitive skills. The patients use special Bi-Manu Trainer gloves to control the game.
It had to be light, not overloaded with information, and provide ample descriptions as to what to do next. The games are connected to the reporting system and track user actions to see whether the patient’s health is improving. We also had to pay special attention to the user interface and experience since the main users are people with cognitive impairment.
Comprehensive Dashboard
The doctors need to utilize all kinds of information they can get about the patient’s health in order to help. It is also critical to be able to adjust the treatment in time.
Reha-Stim Report is a custom therapy management software where the patient’s actions in the game are accumulated in a database and passed along for further analysis by a doctor. The combination of the games and this dashboard allows clinics and stroke units to offer flexible treatment options tailored for each individual patient.
