Why iterations are so critical for software progress

Strange though it might sound, in the context of today’s economy any kind of business is about software. This is because the enterprises have realized that the quickest way to integrate the innovation into the industry is software. Earlier the companies had to spend weeks and months in order to modify or supplement the existing facilities, but now it takes literally few seconds to release and distribute software products among the gadget users, electronically operated industrial equipment, corporate data processing systems and many other software-host products. That’s exactly why these days lots of companies are looking for highly experienced software-related personnel. It appears that in this case, the iterations come to help.

But this is also a tricky part of the business: if you invest all your funds for hiring the most qualified software developers, you will feel the lack of resources to allocate for innovation advancement.

    The bids make a difference

The venture investors, specialized in discovering the most promising innovative startups, will keep honest that it is considered to be real luck if among ten companies they invest in at least one of them is repaid.  One of the most significant contributions made by the open cloud to the venture business is broadened the range of opportunities to make the bids by investing into more startups with lower capitalization since these startups can be launched without purchasing expensive hardware. The increased number of bids have logically led to a bigger number of successful cases when the investments were rewarded.

If using the same calculation method in the software development business, it has been found out that the software vendors have only a ten percent probability of success when the release of any innovation-containing solution on the market. Therefore, the vendor can choose one of the following scenarios: it may have only four chances if the release is performed once a quarter, twelve chances – if the products are released once a month and fifty-two chances in case of weekly releases. It is easily comprehended that more releases, more iterations of software production lead to more chances to succeed.

    Zooming iterations

Almost thirty years ago software was basically launched in data centers by using physical hardware, the developers paid more attention to mitigating the risks than to increasing speed of iterations. Back at the time these physical servers had limited operational capacity and were in short supply. In fact, they were the only instrument that allowed computation units launching the software stacks. Replacing such a computation unit usually took several months. The elements of an integrated application were usually connected with each other in the common memory ecosystem or via connections between a client and a server by using custom protocols. All these elements were usually transferred to the development stage together for the purpose of risk mitigation, however, on the flipside, if one of the elements failed, the entire application had to be called off that, indeed, decreased the iteration speed significantly.

However, the virtual facilities and containers can be produced in a few minutes or even seconds that has drastically transformed the perception of the application elements by software developers. HTTP-based APIs replaced dependence of the components on in-memory or connection through the custom protocols, therefore, the elements started playing the role of a contract between the other elements. As long as the contract remains unchanged, it is possible to release one single component regardless of other components. Moreover, by putting each separate component behind its own load distributor, it became possible to scale each component individually, along with the new option to perform deployments by replacing the old increments of the components, removing from behind the load distributors, by the new components being integrated.

These are the overriding principles of a microservices-focused architecture which allows more loosely-bound connections due to the API contracts, comparing to the solid-cast forerunners, and provides quicker iterations.

Kubernetes and serverless technology are crucial

Now you have lots of containers to navigate for all microservices and this leads you to the next challenge: you have to find a method to allocate them in various physical or virtual hosts, determine naming and scheduling, reinforce network building capability since multiple elements can be located on the same host, bringing to naught the necessity for packets to move to the network card. That’s why Kubernetes means so much, and Google, Cisco, and AWS are so involved in the container clustering platform. Putting this another way, all these are also called the iterations, thus, the software developers are able to bound the elements more loosely and to release them as quickly as they discover the innovation.

But wait there is more. The huge advantage of serverless architectures is that they may represent the next cycle of progress. Comparing to the coupling elements by using the API contracts, the event-driven functions are bounded via event gateways. That’s why unlike providing lots of increments placed behind a load distributor, the serverless functions are located on the disk until the moment when the event makes them active. This paradigm calls for a more stateless method to create logic inside the separate functions but at the same time, this is more unbound coupling than the microservices with improved underlying use of a physical server as the functions are inactive until required.

Inference should be drawn that the optimal way to discover promising initiative is to maximize iterations and to get rid of unpromising ones as soon as you detect them. This approach is a baseline for building application architecture, container clustering platforms and serverless algorithms in order to make the process of software development and finished apps release as smooth as possible. Enabling maximum amount of iterations leads to revealing of the innovative potential and this is exactly what all businesses are looking for these days making the iterations to be a powerful factor of software development progress.
